Shohei Ohtani Aims for Historic 40-40 Milestone: 40 Home Runs and 40 Stolen Bases

Shohei Ohtani Aims for Historic 40-40 Milestone: 40 Home Runs and 40 Stolen Bases

Shohei Ohtani, who set a record last year with a stolen base of 46 home runs for the Angels, has shattered that record in this season alone. On the 28th July Ohtani broke his own personal record by stealing his 27th base of the season.

Ohtani has already matched Kirk Gibson’s 1988 Dodgers record for most games with seven such games in 2024 that included a home run and a stolen base game. That year, Gibson ended the season with 25 home runs and 31 steals, not to mention the MVP title that came with it in the National League.

To be specific, on July 7 which was the 91st game of the Dodgers’ season, Ohtani achieved the 20 home run and 20 stolen base mark to become the first major league player to do so. He hit for the 30-threat in his 111 th game with the Dodger and attained the number four record as the fastest player in the doing this after matching Jose Canseco’s record of 1988.

Canseco was the first player to hit for 40 home runs with 40 stolen bases in the same season; since then, Barry Bonds (1996), Alex Rodríguez (1998), Alfonso Soriano (2006), and Ronald Acuña Jr (2023) have also achieved record. Specifically, Soriano was the quickest one among all players of this specific group to achieve 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a single season in 148 team games.

Specifically, the Dodger team has never had 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a season. The most accurate was Matt Kemp of Los Dodgers in the season 2011 with 40 steals, scoring 39 homers at home and playing 161 encounters. In a home game against Colorado on August 11, in the alumni weekend, Kemp was celebrated and he praised Ohtani.

Ohtani has also continued to perform well, scoring two more home runs in the last three games after Kemp sponsored him. To the best of my knowledge, only Ohtani, Kemp, and Raúl Mondesí, in 1997 and 1999 had ever achieved the 30-30 club.

Oh he’s got that easy,” Kemp said of Ohtani’s chances of 40-40 this year. “He’ll beat me because he’s got 35 home runs and it’s not even September.”

Ohtani reached his first benchmark of 2024 for the first time on April 21 as he erased Hideki Matsui’s record for the most home runs by a Japanese-born MLB player when he hit his 176th home run.

Two weeks later, he was able to accomplish another great feat. His eighth home run put him ahead of Dodgers’ skipper Dave Roberts for the record of home runs by a player of Japanese origin in the franchise.

Ohtani celebrates his 200th home run in his career on the July 13th. Interestingly, he achieved this milestone and hit 30 home runs in the season eight days later. He managed to achieve this feat in just 100 team games which means that it is the fifth fastest 30-homer season in the entire Dodgers history.

The record for the most stolen bases by a primary DH was broken recently by Ohtani after he achieved 31 steals in the 2021 season which was previously held by Paul Molitor in 1992.

Alfonso Soriano set this record for most stolen bases by players with over 45 homeruns in the year 2006 with 41. On the other hand, Larry Walker achieved an outstanding mark in 1997 by making a record for highest home runs, 49 of them, but only if the player had at least thirty stolen bases.
