Shohei Ohtani Named NL MVP Finalist, Judge and Imanaga Shine in Awards Race

Shohei Ohtani Named NL MVP Finalist, Judge and Imanaga Shine in Awards Race

Shohei Ohtani's remarkable season continues to draw attention as he was named a finalist for the National League MVP award, despite spending the year with the Los Angeles Dodgers after switching to a full-time hitter following an elbow injury. The 30-year-old Japanese superstar has made history in multiple ways this season, including becoming the first player in Major League Baseball to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season. Ohtani’s stats are staggering — .310 batting average, 54 home runs, 130 RBIs, and 59 stolen bases — cementing his place in MLB history.

This marks Ohtani’s fourth consecutive MVP nomination, and if he wins, he would make history as the first-ever designated hitter to receive the prestigious honor. Ohtani has already made history with his 2nd unanimous MVP win last year, and with another win this year, he would break new ground by earning MVP with unanimous votes in consecutive seasons and being the first to claim the title across both leagues. In addition to home runs and RBIs, he also led the league in runs, on-base percentage, slugging, OPS, and extra-base hits.

Meanwhile, in the American League, Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees earned a spot as a finalist after an outstanding season with 58 home runs and 144 RBIs. Judge has been one of the league's most consistent power hitters, and his dominance in multiple categories makes him a strong contender for MVP honors. The Royals' Bobby Witt Jr. and Yankees’ Juan Soto also earned AL MVP nominations with stellar seasons of their own.

On the pitching side, Shota Imanaga, who had an impressive rookie season with a 15-3 record and a 2.91 ERA with the Chicago Cubs, unfortunately did not make the final cut for NL Rookie of the Year. Despite this, his performance was a significant achievement for a rookie pitcher, marking a bright future for the Japanese star.

The final MVP winners will be announced on November 22nd, Japan time.
