Shohei Ohtani set the record of the first MLB player to achieve both 50 home run and 50 steal in a single year. Also, during that game, he became a member of the 51-51 club for his team which secured its first top-post-season spot.
Fortunately, there is no sign that Ohtani has shown readiness to ease up, not even after attaining this milestone figure. On the weekend he has hit two more home runs against Colorado Rockies and has stolen four more bases in a set. He added stole his 56th base on his Wednesday to equal the record of the great Ichiro Suzuki for Japanese origin players for most stolen bases in a season.
“He is somebody I admire to look up to,” Ohtani said, through interpreter Will Ireton. “Yes I tied the record, but regardless, I will continue to steal when the time is necessary.”
The plan came into effect during the sixth inning when Ohtani, being endowed with excellent vision and instincts hit an RBI single to give the Dodgers a 4-3 lead against the San Diego Padres. Earlier, he had made the game’s first run in the opening inning besides making a double that resulted to a second run in the fourth inning, making this the third consecutive time that the player had contributed significantly to formation of the go-ahead run.
He played 2/3 of the game and scored a run, got 2 RBIs and what is most valuable, a stolen base. Their win in a split five-game series was a 4-3 victory, and with four games to go, the Dodgers had a three-game lead over the Padres in the NL West. The Dodgers will now look forward to the completion of the season with the Colorado Rockies, whose batting lineup excels in Coors Field and the team has a golden opportunity to make it as the division champions on Thursday.
Regardless of the fact that there are only several chances left in the season to make his game even better, Ohtani remains unaffected by this fact. After Wednesday’s game, he may only have four more games to play and achieve a record breaking 54 home runs and 57 stolen bases when the season ends. At the moment, he hit 53 home runs and steal base 56 times. He will surely be doing all he can to push those statistics even higher into the realms of the unexplainable because every little second counts.
