Atletico Madrid briefly rose to the second position in the league log on the day they thrashed Real Valladolid who was in the bottom of the log with a 5-0 loss in the La Liga match at Jose Zorrilla Stadium.

A dominating performance, Atletico secured their victory in seven straight games in all competitions, and a total of 32 points more than two games left for Real Madrid to play. In contrast, Barcelona which had a shocked lost to Las Palmas with 2-1 earlier on the day still leads in the charts with 34 points.

“I’m happy with the team’s performance. We know that every match is important and we came out very well today. Three important points and let’s keep going like this,” Antoine Griezmann said.

Clément Lenglet is free to give a cool for a cross from Marcos Llorente on the right in the 26th minute to complete Atletico Madrid’s goalless. This was an emotional win for the French defender more so because it was his first La Liga goal in over three years.

Even fans of Barcelona roared for the appreciable performance of Atlético when Antoine Griezmann fired into the net with a team effort seven minutes into the second half; the team continued their superiority in the second forty five minutes.

“The affection is appreciated. I feel very good and I hope to give more, I am grateful for the applause (from Valladolid fans). That’s what we footballers want, for them to enjoy us, whether they are our opponents or our team,”  Griezmann added.

In the seventy-second minute Iván Sánchez created a dangerous opportunity for putting Valladolid in front with a good shot at the crossbar but in vain.

The visitors were completely outplayed and Atlético sealed the game much further thanks to a stunning last minute, first half-stoppage time goal by Alexander Sørloth. Since then Valladolid has become rooted to the bottom of the table with only nine points in hand after having been subjected to their tenth league defeat in only fifteen matches.

“There is no explanation, we played a very bad game,” Valladolid captain Javi Sanchez said. “We have to be critical of ourselves. We had the hope of turning the situation around but it didn’t go well.”
