Venetia Williams has given the green light for L'Homme Presse's highly anticipated comeback at Lingfield as part of the Winter Million Festival. The Cheltenham Festival victor, absent since an unfortunate incident in the 2022 King George VI Chase, looks to rebound after an unseating incident with jockey Charlie Deutsch, preventing a Gold Cup bid last spring.
Priced at 16/1 for the coveted event, L'Homme Presse is poised for a return after more than a year away from the track, with the Fleur de Lys Chase scheduled for January 21 marked as the comeback race for the nine-year-old.
"He's fine and Lingfield is the plan for the Fleur de Lys," said Williams. "All being well, he is on course for that."
“I was very pleased with him and, like all these horses, it is one step at a time, but each question we’ve asked of him, he’s answered very positively,”
In addition to L'Homme Presse, Williams possesses another promising chaser in Djelo, whose burgeoning acclaim was further bolstered with a notable performance in Ascot's Noel Novices' Chase before the holiday season.
“He’s a very different horse to L’Homme Presse, he’s much smaller and different, L’Homme Presse is a big wheel and this horse isn’t.
“I don’t think the trip is that important to him. For the time being, I’m not worried whether it is two or two and a half – I could have run him in the graduation chase (at Ascot) over two-miles-five.”
Last season, the six-year-old secured only one victory in five starts under Williams over hurdles. However, since transitioning to fences, he has shown remarkable improvement. Following successful outings at Aintree and Newbury, he effortlessly embraced the challenge of competing in Grade Two company, securing an impressive six-length win over Paul Nicholls' Kandoo Kid.
