Scottie Scheffler was thrown into the spotlight at this particular tournament just a year ago—not for his golf, but for his arrest, which garnered national attention.
The story is completely different in the present day. By winning his first PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, the World No. 1 dramatically changed the course of events. He made a dramatic and lyrical change by exchanging the shine of the recognizable Wanamaker Trophy for a mugshot and a night in a cell.
With a dominant 11-under-par final round on Sunday, Scheffler finished five strokes ahead of a group that was trailing: Harris English, Davis Riley, and Bryson DeChambeau.
Even though he made a bogey on the 18th, it didn't really matter. In a rare moment of emotion, Scheffler threw his hat to the ground, gave his caddy, Ted Scott, a passionate embrace, and hurried into the gallery, where his wife, Meredith, and their son welcomed him, capping a comeback that was as intimate as it was professional.
“It was weird because at 7, 8, 9, I felt like I hit really good tee shots. And I looked up and it was 30 yards left where I was looking which was a bit unsual. Making the turn, I kind of squared my shoulders up and I hit a really good tee ball at 10, a really good tee ball at 11. After that, I did a really good job at executing on a lot of fairways, a lot of greens. Played a really good nine holes when I really needed too,” Scheffler said.
“This is a lot of fun. But at the end of the day life at home for us is pretty much the same. You know we have a pretty good little life and we have great friends at home and I’m looking forward to getting home and celebrating with them,” he added.
Scheffler became one of the select few to win three career majors and fifteen PGA Tour championships by clinching this victory, joining the likes of Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.
He began his season in late January, but the victories weren't easy. Months went by with no victory. Then, two weeks ago, Scheffler finally made his breakthrough by winning the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, which was held at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas.
