Thunder Punch Ticket to Playoffs, Take Down Defending Champs in Statement Win

Oklahoma City Thunder secured their postseason berth by defeating a team they might very well face in the most crucial situations.

While Shai Gilgeous-Alexander dominated with 34 points, Chet Holmgren made an impression with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Together, they led Oklahoma City to an exciting 118–112 victory over the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night, a matchup that may portend a matchup on the NBA's greatest stage.

Last January 5, the Thunder defeated the Celtics in Oklahoma City, a victory that was achieved without Chet Holmgren, who was injured and missed the game.

The NBA Finals are the biggest stage of all, so if these two titans cross paths again this season, it will be there.

“Playing against them is always fun, it’s always a really good challenge, and something that we could test ourselves against. I guess we passed the test so far,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “They’ve achieved what we’re trying to accomplish, and there’s no better test than that in the NBA.”

“You put the work in, put the time in … we took steps in the right direction. We got better and we, I guess checked a goal off the list a little bit earlier than last year, and we have a lot more to do,” Gilgeous-Alexander said, “It means we got better than we were last year. Ultimately, that’s all you can ask for.”

The Celtics, whose deep shooting helped them win an NBA championship for the 18th time last season, unleashed their shooting from beyond the arc at a never-before-seen pace on Wednesday. They broke a franchise record and tied the most number ever attempted by a club in a regulation game with an incredible 63 three-pointers.

However, with an impressive 54-12 record, Oklahoma City has dominated the competition and imposed their will. They continue to hold a commanding 12-game lead over the Memphis Grizzlies, the conference's runner-up, solidifying their hold on the top spot in the Western Conference.

“Every game’s a test, Nothing given, everything earned,” Oklahoma City made a post on X after winning on Wednesday.
