Japanese Two-Way Star Shotaro Morii Signs Historic MLB Deal with Oakland Athletics

Japanese Two-Way Star Shotaro Morii Signs Historic MLB Deal with Oakland Athletics

Japanese two-way phenom Shotaro Morii has made history by signing with Major League Baseball’s Oakland Athletics, earning a record $1.5 million signing bonus for a Japanese amateur. The 18-year-old star from Tokyo’s Toho High School will be developed as a two-way player, both as a left-handed slugger and a right-handed pitcher.

During his high school career, Morii impressed scouts by hitting 45 home runs and throwing pitches clocked at 153 kilometers per hour (95 mph). Speaking at an online press conference, Morii shared his excitement about the opportunity to pursue a professional career abroad.

“I feel really happy to be able to do both,” he said. “I want to make the most of this chance.”

Despite being highly sought after by Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) teams in Japan’s 2024 draft, Morii chose to take his talents directly to MLB, a move that has generated significant buzz.

“This is a historic day for our organization,” said A’s assistant general manager Dan Feinstein. “We are anxious and excited to watch Shotaro both pitch and hit as he begins his ascent through our minor league system this spring.”
