Four-time Formula One world champion, Max Verstappen also reflected for a while as Las Vegas lit up and the crowd cheered. He looked at her and took a deep breath before a contented, small smile crossed his lips; the enormity of his greatest triumph weighed intensely on him.
Verstappen clinched the title in the glamour of the Strip with the ruthless precision and consistently unerring reliability that has largely defined his title-winning campaign, let alone with daring or style. It was fitting to see that in a titanic clash fitting of the student he has become a true champion.
The title was won with the sort of precision and uncompromised reliability that have become Verstappen’s hallmarks this season and not by taking risks or influence flamboyance. On this one, however, going by the champion he has now turned into, it was a befitting victory.
In a race that was masterfully sealed by George Russell of Mercedes, Verstappen came home fifth for Red Bull but the defending world champion was perfect with his strategy. It was a superb match, and even some more experienced casino professionals might have paid attention to Verstappen being very calm and establishing a very, very methodical kind of play; he opened the cards that he needed, he played the appropriate amount of cards, and left with exactly what was required of him. Verstappen was comfortably dominant in a race in which his closest title rival, Lando Norris of McLaren, could only manage sixth place.
It was another typical performance of Verstappen who is able to maximise every situation that he finds himself in. And so, the key issues with pace that Red Bull have been experiencing on this circuit, along with the sheer speed of Ferrari and Mercedes, always made a victory out of reach. But by losing just enough, Verstappen won the championship with 63 points out of the 60 remaining in the two races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
Las Vegas is full of passionate racers and excitement as well as fabulous graphics. Lewis Hamilton was another hero of the race, he started from tenth place on the grid, but was able to climb to the second place. Shortly after, the Ferrari duo of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc came home third and fourth after an enthralling fight to the end.
While the success of George Russell proved that he deserves to be in Formula One, there was no way Max Verstappen’s record breaking achievement would not overshadow it. The Dutchman now matches the four world title records of the great Sebastian Vettel and Alain Prost band of giants. The only people out of this group ahead of me now are drivers such as Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher who have seven and five respectively, and the Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio who has five. Looking at his development, Verstappen understood the importance of the achievement – at one point considering it impossible when he entered F1 in 2015 at the age of 17.
This was not just a victory more than a win George Russell but a chance for redemption. He shook out the remaining irritation over having his triumph in Spa stolen from him after his auto was found to be just a bit too heavy; from pole position to the finish. The happiness he tends to show out of his feeling was laden with realimentum and can be described as true happiness well deserved.
For Mercedes, the substance of it was even more meaningful. This was welcome especially after another season of struggling in and out of the field, slogging through seasons of arid flat performances. The team will no doubt savour this triumph even as they are still struggling to register four victories and even as the dominant force they are yet to be harness. At other times they had been left to poke at it symbolically, unsure if it would grunt like a wild animal or dance like a finely tuned engine. But the automobile purred exactly under the cold laser lights of Las Vegas. That’s why with determination and inspiration in his eyes, Russell made it to life, and deserve this victory and success in his work.
Verstappen and Russell both had their jobs of ensuring the Red Bull secured the race victory and the championship done with. Las Vegas Grand Prix had once again put a spectacular show against the fairy tale, over sized backdrop of the Strip.
Verstappen said that he regarded the event not only as a moment of happiness, but also as an opportunity to reflect on the situation. Pumped up by his achievement he jokingly mentioned that even though he was in a city which was famous for its lavish lifestyle, he would only allow himself a special indulgence. Why not? Very few would be willing to oppose him in the future season and he will surely win more championships to his account.
