Verstappen was left fuming after Sunday morning’s delayed qualifying session, which saw Lance Stroll crash and the red-light issue that saw him and Sergio Perez fail to progress beyond Q2. Verstappen was given a five-place grid penalty for a new internal combustion engine that pushed the car to a penalized seventeenth.

When the race resumed Ocon made a perfect rolling start and allowed Verstappen to overtake him for the lead for a later restart on lap 43. The Safety Car was launched when Carlos Sainz pulled out, which resulted in this particular restart. Subsequently, the Dutch driver was involved in an excellent demonstration driving in torrential rain to overtake Ocon by 19.477 seconds during the last 26 laps.

Verstappen had his first victory since the Spanish GP in the first half of June. His closest competitor, Lando Norris, another Briton who started the race from the pole, did even worse and came P6, so Verstappen extended his lead to an incredible 62 points. Thanks to this large gap he will most certainly win the championship at the next Las Vegas Grand Prix: what a season finale for a Formula One car!

“My emotions today have been a rollercoaster,” said a delighted Verstappen afterwards. “You know, with qualifying, being really unlucky with that red flag and starting P17, I knew that it was going to be a very tough race.

“We made all the right calls again, stayed calm, and executed when we needed to, so incredibly happy with today. Honestly, it's crazy. I never expected to go from P17 to P1. I was hoping for good points, but this is absolutely crazy.”

“Of course I was very frustrated with qualifying,” Verstappen added. “But we tried to just use it as a good motivation in the race. Luckily we had a great start and from there onwards, we were just having a really good feeling in the car.

“So I’m very happy, but still three tough races [to go], so we just need to stay calm and make no mistakes.”

Red Bull harnessed 32 points of the total points of the Sprint weekend of which 31 of them were given to Verstappen. His teammate, Perez, failed to score any point during the São Paulo Grand Prix. Thanks to this performance Red Bull was able to leave behind their competitors – McLaren scored 27 points, while Ferrari – 20. This meant that the third-place team improved its positions considerably in constructors’ standings and raised the stakes for positions at the higher end of the table.
