Yamaguchi and Hot Dominate 2024 IAU 100k World Championships in India

Japan’s Jumpei Yamaguchi and France’s Floriane Hot emerged as the champions of the 2024 IAU 100k World Championships raced on the weekend of December 7-8 in Bengaluru, India. After rising from a second-place finish in 2022, Yamaguchi scored an incredible 6:After 12:17 finish, he clinched his first championship title. Hot demonstrated her domination in the women's field by defending the title she had already secured two years prior with an outstanding time of 7:08:43.

Temperatures were over 27C, and the humidity index was something close to 80%, and yet this was an ultra-distance race – incredible! Endurance runners competing in Bengaluru faced a strenuous 4.865 kilometres wide round, and the facility’s 914 metres profile.

From a two-man battle like the one in the Japan GP last year, Jumpei Yamaguchi and Haruki Okayama were virtually neck and neck for much of the final. In the middle of that match point it seemed quite obvious that the Japanese team had followed the pattern of previous dominance.

Yamaguchi and Okayama started the charge right away, gaining the defining lead among the chasing pack. Although the reigning chefs of France and Japan would not permit them to part in such a manner. At 30 km, the gap between the leaders and chasers has opened from thirty seconds to a whopping ninety seconds thus proving that the Japanese were in charge of the race.

At the halfway point there was a close following pack of Vipul Kumar of India, Charlie Lawrence of USA and Olle Meijer of Sweden all at striking length. Looking at the movement in the race they were able to provide concerted efforts to the race which indicated that the leadership board would have to change.

68-kilometer point, Jumpei Yamaguchi was leading beyond the reach that Haruki Okayama could overtake him for second place. Behind them a determined Spanish three of Felix Pont, Gazapo and Aguilar worked in concert with tactical precision while the farce unfolded. This made the combined efforts of Aguilar and Okayama pay as the Mexican driver overtook the Japanese and took second place in preparation for an exciting end to the race.

Yamaguchi enjoyed a comfortable lead of 12 minutes into the last lap, virtually assuring him a win. The fight for the remaining two positions in the podium, nevertheless, was quite dramatic and far from getting a decisive conclusion as the chasers continue to swap positions.

Yamaguchi ultimately won handily with a timing of 6:9:39: 12:17, coming in well ahead the pack to possibly capped the championship. Aguilar of Spain finished in second place behind him with a strong time of 6:25:54, Haruki Okayama, current champion, did her best to clinch the third place, finishing at 6:37:54; what a race it was!
