Yankees Stumble in AL East Title Bid Despite Aaron Judge's Record-Setting Performance

The New York Yankees missed out on the chance to consecutively clinch the AL East division for the second time with a 9-7 loss to the Baltimore Orioles while Aaron Judge set a new career record of 142 RBIs.

The Orioles scored three runs in the first and was leading until the Yankees rallied with some offense of their own in the ninth. In the next inning, Juan Soto hit a single to score an Anthony Rizzo home to reduce the gap to 9-4. Soon after Judge’s league-leading 57th homer, a three-run shot which brought the Yankees to within two, the comeback quickly fizzled out.

"Coming up short last year, it stings," Judge said. "It hurts just like any other year that you don't win a World Series, but that one hurt a little bit more. So we wanted to make a statement, come back here and put ourselves in a good position going into the postseason

Without wasting time the Orioles resorted to their pitching strategy, set Matt Bowman to the bench for Keegan Akin who later guarded the game, defeating their division rivals.

The Yankees Aaron Judge did not loss hope and went on to perform as expected, hitting his 4th successive home run and taking the total of his RBIs this season to 142. This achievement makes him the first player in NFL history to score above 140 runs in a single season; Ryan Howard and Prince Fielder were the last players to achieve this by scoring 141 runs in 2009. The longest gap between different seasons an MLB player with 140 or more RBIs had occurred 14 years ago, so far as this record was initially recorded in 1920. This is still an ongoing run for Judge, but the Yankees demand greater collective efforts to overcome their divisional hurdles.

Having nearly clawed back a big deficit, Judge chose to focus on the team’s effort in a post-game interview. “No quit in the team there all the way till the end,” the 2022 AL MVP said, “I never feel like we’re ever out of a game no matter the score.”

It elicited a nightmare start against the Yankees where reliever Marcus Stroman allowed six straight singles to open the inning, a streak that Baltimore has never come through in albeit the least 1969. He did so in the second when scoring an RBI single that cut the gap to 3-1 and gave the home-fans some hope after the Orioles had three runs up after the first inning.

However, New York encounter one challenge again in the fourth inning. Such decisive moments of that game as two-RBI single which Gunnar Henderson produced to thrive the Baltimore scored and the earsplitting jeers from the frustrated fans gave the guests at Yankee Stadium. As fans pondered if the team’s issues would continue as the tried to try and change the narrative in the later innings, Stroman’s night had to end here.

In the relief on the mound, Clayton Beeter was not so lucky and allowed two RBI doubles by Colton Cowser and Anthony Santander in the fourth game. James McCann then made an RBI single in the fifth to bring the score to 8-1.

“Nothing’s been easy for us this year. Shouldn’t expect it to be now. But we’ve kind of persevered and kind of grinded our way through all of it,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone, “We’ll be ready to go tomorrow.”

In the meantime, however, Juan Soto was not going to let his team give up so easily. He came back to send the fifth inning to the bleachers with a two run home bomb and his 41st for the season which placed the Yankees closer at 8-3. However, in the eighth, Baltimore’s Jordan Westburg wasted no time and brought out an RBI single, which built a nice lead for the Orioles to take the victory.

The Yankees are now struggling although they clinched for the seventh post-season appearance in eight years only last week. They require at least four points from the next four games to clinch their division championship position.
