This is for sure Yomif Kejelcha an ethiopian runner made good use of the situation like a boss and reclaimed the men’s half marathon record by a second on sunday. Despite a climatic challenge, Kejelcha made it in an excited 57 minutes and 30 seconds just one second behind the year 2021 record held by Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda. The race was conducted in the streets of Valencia.
Kejelcha, a silver medallist in the 10,000-meter world championship in the past and the current indoor mile world record holder having set it in Boston last year, brilliantly displayed his longevity once again. This latest achievement ensures that he remains one of the most versatile distance runners of his generation, although he only managed a sixth place finish in the 10,000m final at the Olympic Games in Paris last summer.
"This race wasn't easy," Kejelcha said, “Today I told myself to do it in 57 minutes, and I saw from the clock on the lead car that it was possible, despite the rain. I wanted to break the world record and I'm really happy I did it.”
Yomif increased the tempo leaving Mateiko and Lasoi behind to struggle the clock alone when he saw how dire the situation was. His perseverance paid off as he crossed the finish line in 57:30 in which he shaved off 11 seconds from his personal record, tying with another lad to become the world record holder. As for speed and significance, it was a solo victory.
Kejelcha’s record will be approved before it is endorsed by World Athletics, like all records in track and field. But for now, there is nothing that can be said about this — there’s simply excitement. This is the second consecutive time such a small margin has been used to beat the men’s half marathon record. Kibiwott Kandie’s previous record shared a year ago—also in Valencia—was trimmed by a second at most when Kiplimo recorded his own.
Mateiko came in second with a strong time of 58:17 which was a personal best beating the previous record and Lasoi was third with 58:21. Ethiopian runner Gemechu Dida finished in fourth place with a lifetime best time of 58:39 and Kenyan rookie Vincent Kibet Langat arrived on the scene with a very impressive run time of 58 : 41. Olympic champion Barega added to the day's outstanding efforts by finishing in the top six with a strong time of 58:57.
It was possible for each athlete to perform a personal best and, through sheer determination, Kejelcha made history.
