San Diego Padres pitcher Yu Darvish may miss Opening Day due to general body fatigue, according to an official team report.
Darvish delivered a solid performance in his latest Spring Training outing on March 14, pitching four innings with four strikeouts and allowing just one earned run. However, manager Mike Shildt revealed that the veteran right-hander has been experiencing fatigue, leading the team to temporarily halt his throwing program.
Over the past two days, Darvish has been limited to non-throwing activities. When asked about his availability for the season opener, Shildt stated, “We don’t have enough information yet to say whether this will affect his status.”
With Darvish unlikely to start, the Padres announced on March 18 that Michael King will take the mound on Opening Day. King is coming off a career-best season, posting a 13-9 record with a 2.95 ERA and 201 strikeouts.
Last season, Darvish opened the year as the Padres’ starter in a historic matchup against the Dodgers in South Korea. If he had been selected again this season, it would have marked his fourth Opening Day start for the team, tying a franchise record. However, that milestone will have to wait until at least 2026.
