Yuka Saso Makes History: Second U.S. Women's Open Victory “This Time It's for Japan!"

Yuka Saso went to the rough at the onset when she made a four-putt and then regained her composure with spectacular shots that contributed to a back nine of 32 to win the title on the last day at the U. S. Women’s Open.

This win means that Saso has now won two LPGA titles in her career, the previous one being in this major event. She has added Lancaster Country Club to the list of her courses across the year 2021 and her victory at The Olympic Club.

Thus, she is the youngest of the players who have won two USWOC titles, as she achieved this at the age of 22. By winning her first two majors, she has joined the likes of Seri Pak and In Gee Chun who also achieved similar accomplishments during Lancaster in 2015.

Saso ended the tournament at a total of 4 under par, thereby leading the previous AIG Women’s Open winner Hinako Shibuno with a score of 72. It was such a competitive climax to the tournament. Andrea Lee struggled and scored 75 on the day, while Ally Ewing equalled the day’s best of 66 having scored even par to tie for third place.

Saso was born in the Philippines but has been living in Japan since the age of 7. At the age of twenty two, Saso had to decide on her citizenship as the Japanese law provided no other option. For instance, highlighting the benefits of having the Japanese citizenship particularly in terms of options and opportunities, she opted for naturalization as a Japanese citizen.

She is eager to pay respect to both her Japanese origin and a Filipino attitude to motherhood. This wish comes true when each of the countries get to win a major title so that she can wave the flags of both nations as they are proud.

“I think winning in 2021, I represented the Philippines. I feel like I was able to give back to my mom,” Saso said. “This year I was able to represent Japan, and I think I was able to give back to my dad. I’m very happy that I was able to do it.”

“Since 2021, I haven’t won after that. I think it just makes it special because after a long wait, and I wasn’t expecting to win the U.S. Women’s Open,” said Saso, whose father travels with her but who said she hasn’t seen her mother in nearly six months. “Last time, too, I wasn’t expecting it, and this time, too, I wasn’t expecting it. I think that’s why it made me a bit emotional.”

With $2. 4 million won while playing at the Lancaster Country Club, Yuka Saso wins. The USGA has wisely chosen to boost the winner's portion of the overall prize money from 18% to 20%.

The fact that the total purse has increased to $12 million alone indicates a comprehensive reorganization of the tournament's structure. The prize money for this year's event is the highest ever given to female golfers, with $1 million more than for last year's.
