Messi Strikes Twice as Inter Miami Clinches MLS Playoff Berth with Win Over NYCFC

Miami defeated New York City FC 4-0 at Citi Field on Wednesday night, with Messi scoring twice in the second half. With the win, Miami guaranteed their place in the Major League Soccer postseason for the third consecutive year, and Messi now has five goals in the last nine days.

Baltasar Rodríguez's goal shortly before halftime gave Miami a one-goal lead. Then, in the 74th minute, Messi scored his first goal of the evening, giving Miami some breathing room. He chipped in an easy goal with his left foot after catching a ball in the middle of the field.

Less than 10 minutes later, Luis Suárez calmly scored a penalty that almost ended New York City FC's chances of winning, giving Miami a bigger lead. After getting a clean ball from Marcelo Weigandt, Messi dribbled past defenders with ease and scored his second goal of the evening from the right side of the box, just when it appeared that the evening had already passed.

The numbers are self-evident. Messi has scored at least twice in eight of Miami's previous 12 games, giving him a total of 24 goals this season. He is only the fourth player in MLS history to score multiple goals in eight games in a single season, making him a unique member of the elite group.

Messi has changed the course of Miami's history since coming here in 2023. He quickly led the team to a Leagues Cup victory that summer and a Supporters' Shield the following season, despite Atlanta United ending their playoff run in the first round. Now that a multi-year deal is rumored to be imminent, Inter Miami looks certain to retain its star center for many years to come.

Miami's victory on Wednesday was their 16th of the season, making yet another statement in an unforgiving campaign. With 55 points from 29 games, the team is currently only five points behind the Philadelphia Union in third place in the Eastern Conference standings. The margins are narrow, and the pursuit is not yet finished. Miami's next matchup is against the Toronto Tempo on Saturday afternoon, which could turn out to be another crucial matchup.
