In a historic move, 26-year-old slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has agreed to a 14-year, $500 million (approx. ¥73 billion) contract extension with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to reports from ESPN’s Jeff Passan on April 7 (JST). The deal, which does not include any deferred payments, makes Guerrero one of the highest-paid players in baseball history based on present-day value.
Guerrero Jr., who made his MLB debut in 2019, is widely recognized as one of the premier hitters in the game. He famously battled Shohei Ohtani for the home run crown in 2021, belting 46 homers to finish just two ahead of the then-Angels superstar. Last season, Guerrero continued to dominate at the plate, hitting .323 with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs.
A homegrown star of the Blue Jays and son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, the younger Guerrero has already amassed 160 career home runs as of April 6. His long-term commitment to Toronto comes just months before he was set to enter free agency, and the move is expected to have a ripple effect on the upcoming free agent market.
