49ers Trade Quarterback Trey Lance to Cowboys

49ers Trade Quarterback Trey Lance to Cowboys

The Buffalo Bills seemingly identified a potential candidate to potentially become the new backup for quarterback Josh Allen, but the Dallas Cowboys intervened and took the opportunity instead.

Prior to the Cowboys acquiring quarterback Trey Lance on Friday in exchange for a fourth-round pick, the Bills presented a trade proposal to the San Francisco 49ers for Lance.

Lance, chosen as the third overall pick in the 2021 draft from North Dakota State, was recently designated as the third quarterback in the San Francisco depth chart. This swiftly led to speculations about potential trades, catching Buffalo's interest in the process.

San Francisco 49ers' general manager, John Lynch, it appears that the Dallas Cowboys had a stronger desire for Lance. It's conceivable that the Buffalo Bills' general manager, Brandon Beane, may have been reluctant to propose anything more than a fifth-round draft pick, leading the 49ers to accept the most favorable trade offer available.

"I think it's going to be a great landing spot for him. Trey's story is still very much unwritten." "Dallas stepped up and really wanted him. They came after him,"

Commencing the previous season as the starter for the 49ers, Lance encountered an injury that concluded his season during Week 2 when facing the Seattle Seahawks. Nonetheless, the 49ers managed to progress to the NFC Championship; however, they were defeated by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Over the span of eight games in his career, Lance has completed 56 out of 102 passes, amassing 797 yards, achieving five touchdowns, and encountering three interceptions. Recognized for his capacity to excel both as a passer and runner, he has also contributed 54 rushing attempts, accumulating 235 yards, and securing one touchdown.

This proficiency for rushing could have seamlessly integrated into the Buffalo offensive strategy, which is already familiar with Allen's running capabilities. Furthermore, the Bills' secondary quarterback options, Kyle Allen and Matt Barkley, have experienced inconsistent performances during the preseason. Lance would undoubtedly have presented an intriguing developmental opportunity in this scenario.

The Bills will wrap up their preseason matches on Saturday, facing off against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. Later in the season, on Sunday, December 17th, they will have Lance and the Cowboys as visitors in Week 15, playing at Highmark Stadium.
