This week, there is an opportunity to acquire the 1996 Mercedes-Benz S600 Lorinser, driven by NBA legend Michael Jordan at the peak of his basketball career. What's remarkable is that it's being offered at an asking price of only $23, symbolically representing His Airness' jersey number. The appraised value of this car is $120,000.
The Mercedes in question is a W140 S-Klasse coupe that belonged to Jordan between 1995 and 2003. Its metallic navy blue exterior gives the impression of being almost black. Inside, one will discover dark gray leather seats, and a fascinating feature is the car phone that continues to display Jordan's name to this very day.
Featured among the diverse collectibles offered for sale at this year's National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago, running from July 26 to 30, is the vehicle associated with Jordan. Priced at $23, potential buyers are required to engage in the selling process through the Whatnot app and participate in the drop. Unlike a conventional auction, Whatnot will opt to choose a winner who will then have the chance to acquire the Mercedes with a $23 transaction.
Jordan, widely hailed as one of the greatest players in NBA history, has seen his memorabilia fetch millions in sales. Notably, last September, his game-worn Chicago Bulls jersey from Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals was sold for an astounding $10.1 million, establishing a new record for the highest price ever paid for game-worn sports memorabilia.
Despite Jordan's iconic status and widespread fame, selling his vehicle has presented significant challenges.
A few years ago, the car managed to secure a buyer on eBay for an impressive sum of $202,200. However, it later appeared on Bring a Trailer, a renowned platform specializing in auctions for vintage and classic vehicles. Unfortunately, the original buyer encountered issues obtaining the required funds promptly, resulting in the car being placed back on the market. Last year, the identical Mercedes-Benz reappeared on Beverly Hills Car Club's official website, listed with an asking price of $135,000.
Even though the asking price is only $23, it fits comfortably within the budget of most individuals, ensuring that Whatnot shouldn't have any trouble finding a buyer.
During an Adidas event in China, significantly escalated his ongoing dispute with the Philadelphia 76ers.
