One thing is certain to occur when the 2024–25 NFL season is officially over: "Black Monday." This infamous date marks the climax of Week 18 and the onset of head coach, general managers, and or any other organizational changes necessary for organizations to re-strategize for the summer.
What that league is preparing for is a flurry of adjustments. Every day, front offices and owners will not be spending any time on interviewing candidates, evaluating the candidates that apply by sorting and searching for replacements. There are increasing numbers of notions that teams are interested in changing the conditions for them to reign as the 2025 NFL Draft, free agency, and NFL Scouting Combine approaches.
Jaguars Head Coach Doug Pederson
The Jacksonville Jaguars have fired Doug Pederson, head coach making the first casualty of the ′Black Monday. This comes as a blow not because the change of guard at head coach was expected but there have been increasing rumors about Pederson.
Nevertheless, Pederson was 9-8 with the Jaguars in the past two seasons and led the team to the divisional-round in 2022; overall, Tort, his play deteriorated. The former Super Bowl champion as a head coach had his worst stints in Jacksonville and failed to even record a .500 mark in three seasons with a record of 22-29.
“It’s unfortunate because at the end of the day we all had a hand in it,” Jaguars receiver Christian Kirk said. “I have a ton of respect for Doug. He’s made me a better football player, better man. I think he’s one of the better coaches to have coached in this league, and it’s just unfortunate the way that things went.”
New England Head Coach Jerod Mayo
NFL Head Coach of the new England Patriots Jerod Mayo only lasted for one season as a head coach. When he was fired on September 27th, 2012 after a victory over the bills in Week 18, 360 days after taking over after a victory over the bills in Week 18, 360 days after taking over the team which owner Robert Kraft had groomed Mayo as his successor to Bill Belichick.
Mayo’s appointment in particular was immediately criticized because, despite only having five years experience with the team, he had been their inside linebackers coach. With securing franchise quarterback Drake Maye now, the Patriots will be closely watched as they are in camp behind quarterback desperado teams in the draft standings and starting at the No. 4 spot in the 2025 NFL Draft.
The blame for Mayo's brief stint was placed on Patriots owner Robert Kraft on Monday. “This whole situation is on me. I feel terrible for Jerod. Because I put him in an untenable situation,” Kraft said. “I know he has all the tools as a head coach to be successful in this league. He just needed more time before taking the job.”
Bengals Defensive Coordinator Lou Anarumo
He was fired along with one of the league’s most tenured defensive coordinators, Lou Anarumo on Monday morning.
Although not entirely shocking, it takes place after a disheartening season in which the Bengals failed to make the playoffs due mostly to Cincinnati’s defense even if Burrow was the league’s leading passer both in yards and touchdowns.
When Anarumo, 58 years old, guided the Bengals to Super Bowl 56 three years ago, he had been interviewed for head coaching vacancies but remained. Although with teams like the Jets, he may be potentially eyeing his next gig as defensive coordinator after the team reportedly is looking at interviewing possible replacements for habitual coordinator lover, Rex Ryan.
