At the “Kinoshita Group New CM Production Announcement” event in Tokyo, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts shared an update on Shohei Otani’s rehabilitation following his surgery in November. Otani, who injured his left shoulder during the World Series, is aiming to return to two-way play next season but is unlikely to pitch during the opening game in March 2024.
Roberts revealed that while Otani’s rehabilitation is progressing well, he faces significant challenges in returning to full two-way duties so soon after surgery. “I think it will be difficult for him to play two-way as of March,” Roberts said, acknowledging the team’s plan to focus on Otani’s batting capabilities for the time being.
Otani also underwent surgery on his right elbow ligament in September, further complicating his potential pitching return. With the Dodgers eyeing another World Series title, Roberts emphasized the importance of managing Otani’s workload and taking a long-term view for the season ahead.
The Dodgers are committed to making the most of Otani’s dual-threat abilities in 2024, but Roberts acknowledged that Otani will likely see fewer at-bats as the team manages his role carefully. This will be Roberts’ first time overseeing a two-way player, and he stressed the importance of communication in managing Otani’s unique skills.
The event also marked Roberts’ first visit to Japan in 20 years, where he expressed excitement about the Dodgers’ opening game against the Cubs at Tokyo Dome. “I know how much people in Japan love baseball and the Dodgers,” he said, looking forward to the special event in March.
