General Motors is now formally joining Formula 1 under the Cadillac brand, after its announcement of its intention to do so last year.
One such change is that General Motors and TWG Global intend to initially launch a Cadillac team in the F1 from 2026. Cadillac is to officially enter the sport for the first time with the ability to do so thanks to a planned launch of its own F1 power unit by GM. The team also aims to become a “works” team by year-end of the decade manufacturing both F1 cars and power units.
Formula One will, therefore, have eleven teams on the starting line for the first time since 2016 after Cadillac joined the ranks as the first new team in the championship this year.
For its Formula One debut, GM’s Fahrzeugwerk said that the technologies developed would enhance General Motors’ broader transport mission. Cadillac has set out to enhance car manufacturing by focusing its innovation on a superior electrification, powertrain, software as well as internal combustion engine which will be of value to consumers all over the world.
Formula 1 will place the Cadillac brand at the consumers’ view and bring awareness to the company throughout the world. Besides the evolution of Cadillac Wilkinson’s decision underlines the high level of General Motors technology and creativity on the most famous racing track in the world.
“As the pinnacle of motorsports, F1 demands boundary-pushing innovation and excellence. It’s an honor for General Motors and Cadillac to join the world’s premier racing series, and we’re committed to competing with passion and integrity to elevate the sport for race fans around the world,” said GM President Mark Reuss. “This is a global stage for us to demonstrate GM’s engineering expertise and technology leadership at an entirely new level.”
“We’re excited to partner with General Motors in bringing a dynamic presence to Formula 1,” said Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Global’s motorsports businesses. “Together, we’re assembling a world-class team that will embody American innovation and deliver unforgettable moments to race fans around the world. We appreciate FIA and FOM’s support of our application and their recognition of the value we can bring to the championship.’’
Cadillac F1 has moved very quickly to build a roster as the automotive giant General Motors revealed its F1 plans in January 2023. It involves a team of software engineers, specialist in vehicle dynamics, in aerodynamics and development of chassis and the components. The team’s operations are spread over key locations in Silverstone – England, Warren – Michigan, Charlotte – North Carolina and Fishers – Indiana and they are ready to revolutionalize the Formula One Circuit.
Racing has traditionally been an important part of General Motors’ product portfolio and the automotive giant has won over 3000 racing victories and more driver and manufacturer championships than 100 to become a well-known maker of high-performance powertrains.
Apart from Cadillac F1 program, GM’s partnership with TWG Global strengthens its racing portfolio through partnership with Wayne Taylor Racing, Spire Motorsports, and Andretti Global.
