Hamilton Secures Record 9th Silverstone Win, Defeats Verstappen as McLaren Strategy Backfires

Hamilton Secures Record 9th Silverstone Win, Defeats Verstappen as McLaren Strategy Backfires

In a wet and hurricane-instigated race, Hamilton secured his victory this time on home soil just edging out a pre-race championship leader Max Verstappen who had overtaken McLaren’s Lando Norris in the process.

From this victory, Hamilton has his first since the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix last year, and therefore this will be his most illustrious season at Mercedes before joining Ferrari next year.

With others, Hamilton achieves his 104 career victory, surpassing Michael Schumacher’s record and becoming the only Formula 1 driver, winning the race for the ninth consecutive time. He also reached a new record with twelve consecutive podiums at the same event.

"Since 2021, every day I'm getting up and fighting to train to put my mind to the task and work as hard as I can with this amazing team," Hamilton said. "This is my last race here at the British Grand Prix with this team. I wanted to win this so much for them because I love them and appreciate them so much.

"All the hard work they put in over these years. I'm forever grateful to everyone at Mercedes and all our partners. And to all our incredible fans. I could see you lap by lap. There's no greater feeling to finish at the front here."

George Russell started on the second line, while Hamilton overtook his companion in the Mercedes car on lap 18 due to the rain that was pouring. But the tough going got to Hamilton too, and he soon relinquished the lead to Norris and Oscar Piastri, his McLaren teammate, and finished ahead of him in the first two positions.

As the rain intensify with cars switching from slicks to intermediate tyres, Hamilton was back in the lead. Piastri could have gained vital minutes due to McLaren not pitting both its cars for a ‘double-stack’ to overtake Hamilton.

Initially starting in the fifth position, Verstappen had a rough beginning but when he entered the pitlane to refuel at Red bull he was able to make it back into the race and moved to the third position when Russell opted out of the race due to a technical glitch.

The drivers had to come in for a crucial final pit stop to change the tyres after rain stopped. With the undercut tactic and overtaking a lap ahead of Norris, Hamilton outmaneuvered McLaren and took the lead.

While Verstappen used hard tires for the race which endured through aggressive style of racing in the final stages of the race, both drivers used soft tires. Finally, it arrived on the 48th lap of 52 when Verstappen overtook Norris and Hamilton, though he had a 1. This means that Alonso was able to maintain a 5-second lead through the race because of proper tire management.

It was an indication of joy among the British fans at Silverstone with the triumph. Clearly angered, Hamilton made kind words to Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff and his long-time race engineer Peter Bonnington on the radio.

At the cockpit of his car, the 39-year-old driver took his Union Flag and waved it upon the finish line. Next, he hugged his parents who were waiting for him when he stepped out of the car.

Indeed, it looks like it was only yesterday when Verstappen was victorious in four out of the first five Grand Prix of the season. Despite that, he managed only to secure three out of the next seven grand prix, which yet again puts him to clinch a fourth consequent drivers’ title with 84 points ahead of Norris on the midway of 24 race calendar.
