The Copa America hosts United States were knocked out on Monday in the group stage after a 1-0 loss to Uruguay, the Group C winners this forced the United States to finished the tournament in third place while the Panama qualified for the knock out stage as the runners up.
The goal of Uruguay was very important; with a defender Mathias Olivera avoided a difficult match during the next round to qualify for the quarter-finals as group winners. This meant that the South Americans won three round matches as had not been the case since 1959.
Manuel Ugarte said, "But hey, when we have to score, we score; when we have to play, we play. It's a bit of adapting to the matches and the moments of each match,”
"The pitch was very hard to play on"
In the second half and even after the final whistle, there were chants of fire Gregg showing that the hitch has shifted lot of pressure on the U. S. coach, Gregg Berhalter.
It was very interesting to see Panama at six points after such important 3-1 victory against Bolivia proved to be second in Group C three points ahead of the weakening Americans.
Even after the first half started Uruguay did take a commanding position while United States who had more incentive to do so started the match well. This official of the game was unable to fully control the match and made questionable calls concerning advantage since the game had many interruptions and even fights.
After an incidence of a contact with the US defender Tim Ream in the 27th minute of the match Maximiliano Araujo of Uruguay was substituted by Cristian Olivera while Araujo was dragged off the field on a stretcher with a neck brace. The one, which the striker Folarin Balogun received in the match with the Uruguayan team’s goalkeeper Sergio Rochet made him leave the field, added to the troubles that await the United States.
Despite the fact that the hosts demonstrated higher aggression in the first period of the match, the Uruguayans were closer to scoring. Olivera delivered a good free-kick in the 38th minute that was close to endangering the box but Nunez failed to get at it.
The only other match in Group C which ended in a draw between Bolivia and Panama saw the United States briefly rising to the second spot of the group during the second half with enthusiastic cheers from the Arrowhead stadium crowd. Both teams were happy with less time left on the clock, but the final moments of the game dashed their expectations.
Following Turner’s save that came from Araujo ‘s header back into the game, Olivera managed to grab the ball and scored the only goal in the 66th minute at the United States end of the field. Uruguay’s moment turned in their favour shortly after as the goal scored was awarded after a VAR check for an off side infringement took a long time.
In the closing stage of the game, Rochet dropped a through ball in the 75th minute and the United States took the chance. That goal was revealed for the briefest of moments. The Americans were denied an equalizer, however,. within them Ugarte blocked Christian Pulisic’s effort that had taken a touch of deflection.
