‘I ‘Really Wanted To Play’ - Rafael Nadal Withdraws from Australian Open 2024, Opting for Treatment and Rest in Spain Following Injury

Fans eager for Rafael Nadal's comeback at a Grand Slam will have to exercise patience as the Spaniard announces his withdrawal from the 2024 Australian Open due to a "micro tear" in his muscle, distinct from his previous hip injury, compelling him to skip the Melbourne tournament.

On Sunday morning, Rafael Nadal, the tennis icon, announced his absence from the forthcoming 2024 Australian Open, citing a minor muscle injury.

Returning from a hip injury, Nadal marked his comeback to competitive tennis in the Australian calendar, participating in the Brisbane International and showcasing a solid performance that lasted nearly a year. Despite his commendable run, he exited the tournament in the quarter-finals after facing Jordan Thompson.

Apprehensions arose at the conclusion of that match as Nadal displayed signs of discomfort, raising concerns about a potential new injury for the Spaniard.

Despite his initial optimism, Nadal has officially stated that the "micro tear" in his muscle, although in a different location than his previous hip injury, hinders his ability to participate in a five-set match, prompting his withdrawal from the Australian Open and his return to Spain.

In his statement, Nadal expressed: "Hi all, during my last match in Brisbane I had a small problem on a muscle that as you know made me worried. Once I got to Melbourne I have had the chance to make an MRI and I have micro tear on a muscle, not in the same part where I had the injury and that’s good news.

"Right now I am not ready to compete at the maximum level of exigence in five-set matches. I’m flying back to Spain to see my doctor, get some treatment and rest.

"I have worked very hard during the year for this comeback and as I always mentioned my goal is to be at my best level in three months.

"Within the sad news for me for not being able to play in front of the amazing Melbourne crowds, this is not very bad news and we all remain positive with the evolution for the season.

"I really wanted to play here in Australia and I have had the chance to play a few matches that made me very happy and positive. Thanks all for the support and see you soon! Rafa."

Nadal, who claimed victory at the Australian Open in 2009 and 2022, hasn't competed in a Grand Slam event since the previous year's tournament in Melbourne, where he held the title.

In the second round, he faced an unexpected defeat at the hands of American Mackenzie McDonald, and it was during this match that his hip injury resurfaced.

Despite withdrawing from the Australian Open, Nadal expressed optimism about the upcoming season, assuring fans that the recent injury is not a major setback and acknowledging that he made the decision with the awareness that he wouldn't be in peak condition.

"Within the sad news for me for not being able to play in front of the amazing Melbourne crowds, this is not very bad news and we all remain positive with the evolution for the season. I really wanted to play here in Australia and I have had the chance to play a few matches that made me very happy and positive.

Thanks all for the support and see you soon!" he added.

At a score of 4-6 and 3-5 down, Nadal experienced discomfort, prompting him to take a medical timeout off the court. Upon his return for the third set, which he ultimately lost 7-5, the challenges persisted.

Following a considerable hiatus, Nadal made his comeback in Brisbane.

He intends to consult with his doctor for an evaluation before formulating his plans for the rest of 2024.
