The ideal spring bank holiday is often envisioned by many as an opportunity to relax, possibly curled up indoors with nothing more demanding than grabbing for the remote control. However, a brave few have very different ideas. It's all about speed, mayhem, and a rapidly spinning wheel of cheese for them.
The Cooper's Hill cheese-rolling event, one of Britain's most popular and strange traditions, brings thrill-seekers and adrenaline junkies together in Gloucestershire each year. Attendees of the event, which dates back at least to 1826, either stare in shock or immerse themselves in the action.
An 8-pound wheel of Double Gloucester cheese sits at the center of it all. Starting downhill with a few seconds' head start, it blasts down the 200-yard slope, which is inclined at a torturous 1:2 gradient, occasionally hitting speeds of nearly 70 mph. Competitors launch, tumble, and smash in chase rather than really running after it. There is ferocious resolve instead of elegance. Victory—and the cheese—goes to the first person to the bottom.
A returning YouTuber who won back-to-back titles and a college student who ran for charity—raising money for refugees and the homeless—were among this year's winners. It wasn't simply about chasing cheese for them. Despite the bruising, the goal was to make a statement.
“I shut off my brain and went for it. All the people at the top said they were going to steal my title but this is mine. I worked for this. I risked my life for this. It’s my cheese. Back to back.”
“It was crazy. This year was different,” he said. “Last year the hill was muddy and this year it was dry and dangerous and people got injured.
In the first men's downhill event, 23-year-old YouTuber Tom Kopke of Munich, Germany, easily won and successfully defended the championship he had won the year before. He demonstrated that bravery and maybe a little controlled anarchy can go a long way down Cooper's Hill, despite his bruises.
Behind the scenes, Rod Smart, who has been building the race's coveted dairy missiles for more than 25 years, came back to carry out his traditional duties. He provided the bait that would lead to a series of crashes and crazy pursuits once more.
Four large wheels, each weighing about three kilograms, and three smaller rounds, each weighing about one and a half kilos, were rolled out—literally—to set the scene for an exciting, and almost reckless, celebration of tradition.
