JJ Redick Named LeBron James' Latest Head Coach for Los Angeles Lakers on Four-Year Contract

JJ Redick Named LeBron James' Latest Head Coach for Los Angeles Lakers on Four-Year Contract

Currently working as an ESPN basketball analyst, after discussions with Lakers GM and VP, Rob Pelinka and team owner Jeanie Buss over the weekend. ESPN further stated that Redick was formally offered the job of a coach on Thursday morning.

He became the Lakers favorite after they failed to lure University of Connecticut’s coach Dan Hurley, who is only 39 years old. Redick signed with ESPN in 2021 and despite never being a coach, has become a television personality. He first began making waves in the field of podcasting when he was still actively involved in professional football. One of his podcasts, “Mind the Game,” he hosts along with LeBron James, will now make him directly interact with the Lakers organization where he is set to become the head coach.

This relationship raised eyebrows recently when NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith criticised the timing of the podcast during the season, especially with increasing scrutiny being directed at outgoing Lakers coach Darvin Ham.

While Redick was not yet considered a coaching candidate at the time, Smith reported that several Black coaches reached out to him expressing concerns about a star player starting a podcast with a potential successor to their current coach.

He suggested that these coaches believed LeBron was sabotaging the head coach. Not long ago, less than 10% of NBA head coaches were Black; however, the previous season marked history where Black head coaches comprised the majority in NBA history.

Redick and James began their much-beloved podcast two months ago, and they both have considerable knowledge of basketball as well as spirited discussions when it comes to motivation and tactics. These two great basketball minds will now be working on the Lakers where James, who is six months Redick’s junior, will be the head coach for the team.

All of this though depends with James who at his discretion decides to come back and play together with Anthony Davis and the Lakers. The 22-year -old NBA veteran is allowed to apply for free agency this month by declining his $51. 4 million contract. He shall be in his 22nd season in the autumn season.

The Lakers arguably anchored the signing of Redick as a way of enhancing the prospect of keeping the 20-time All-star and an instrumental figure in the championship they clinched last year.

Coaching basketball is something that Redick does from the heart, although formally he only coached his children’s teams in their youth. An honorary member of the Duke University, he started and spend four seasons as a student athlete of Mike Krzyzewski. Yet, Redick’s climb to stardom from nowhere, going the contrary to what was expected of him, is not entirely anomalous to past Lakers unconventional actions and current NBA trends.

With Redick’s decision, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka and team owner Jeanie Buss have now brought another typical unconventional offseason coaching search to a close. This will be eight head coaches since Phil Jackson, who left in the year 2011 and four since LeBron James signed in the year 2018.

Only after six weeks of looking for one, in 2022 Ham was selected; but, after the Lakers’ elimination in the first round of the upcoming Western Conference playoffs, the assistant coach was fired. Despite leading the team to two successful seasons and winning the team’s first-ever In-Season Tournament, the preparation process and the leadership Ham provided was not what some fans, analysts, and the management of the Los Angeles Lakers expected.

For instance, Davis stated in the playoffs, the Lakers undergo some phases when they lose effectiveness on attacking and defending styles.

Ham was hired by the Lakers at the time Frank Vogel was fired, a period of eighteen months after Frank Vogel had taken the team to a championship in the Orlando bubble in Florida. Vogel was coach Walton’s replacement after the Lakers underwent a long coaching search that had them set their sights on Tyronn Lue. Nevertheless, the negotiations failed because of the issues with the management and funds.

Redick played in NBA for six different teams including Orlando magic, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, New orleans pelicans, Milwaukee bucks, and Dallas Mavericks. He scored 12. is averaging 8 points per game with 940 regular-season games under his belt, and as of now, he is ranked 20 with 1,950 three-pointers made in the NBA.
