Jon “Bones” Jones knocked out Stipe Miocic through a technical knockout (TKO) at New York City’s Madison Square Garden to retain UFC heavyweight title. People often became spectators of the show and were impressed by it, Jones’ power and accuracy that in the end demonstrated his dominance in the octagon.
In the third round, Jones landed a perfect spinning back kick and Miocic had no chance afterwards after jones’s kick landed on his left rib cage squarely. This was the pivotal moment. This is where Jones would exploit the situation and used ground-and-pound to batter Kizer into a state where the referee had no choice but to step in. He then stepped on the gas by pumping accurate right hooks and straight kicks to Miocic’s body that seem to land often in the latter’s ribcage.
Jones’ team revealed to the world that their strategy, which was spot on, was to target Miocic’s body to tire him out. In the second round of the title fight, the defending heavyweight champion was putting relentless pressure, upping the work rate, and arguably doing a lot of damage.
Miocic flurried with jabs that boosted him momentarily although Jones retaliated with hard leg kicks before the bell, keeping the advantage on the judges’ scorecards as the round came to an end. In the third, Jones began a more aggressive assault using hooks to the right during the strike. Then with disgusting nonchalance he moved to his kick straight combo and laid Miicic down and left the opponent visibly shaken.
The most devastating strike of the fight came from Jones with 4:All of which left 35 inside the third round and that was when he kicked Miocic right on the ribcage using a spinning back kick. It had an instant effect. Jones began to land more and more ground-and-pound strikes after Miocic went down to one knee, grimacing in pain.
Regardless of very dominating appearances, Jones commended the former UFC champion for his strength and determination, which makes it extremely challenging to knock him out; a trait exhibited by Miocic. Early on Jones gained domination full mount position and was close to finishing the fight during the first round. Although Miocic has always been at a high level, he showed excellent courage, having received such an attack and still being able to hold out and actively fight for the first five minutes.
As for the second round, it was to see Miocic who attempted to press Jones with his usual strategy of having a sense of urgency. However, the forward motion of Miocic was blunt quite easily by the defending heavyweight champion who immediately shut down the pressure with a sharp leg kick.
After the successful title Defense Jones has an impressive record of 28 wins and only one loss while the record of Miocic was set for 20 wins and 5 losses. During the traditional post-fight interview, a polite Miocic said thank you to the MSG fans and shared that he retired after an exciting time in New York City.
Jones is one of the only four fighters, who has been able to retain championships in two weight classes, and he is within a group that has Cormier, Nunes and Cejudo.
Jones said in his post-fight interview that he does not plan on retiring and that he will sit down with the UFC president, Dana White, to figure out his next fight. Miocic on the other hand, reiterated his decision to retire after the fight and proclaimed that he will be retiring from the sport should he put up a good fight.
