Verstappen emerged victorious over his teammate Sergio Perez and Ferrari's Carlos Sainz in a race that saw a red flag brought out due to a collision on the opening lap involving Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and Williams' Alex Albon.
At the head of the pack into Turn 1 was Verstappen, the polesitter, with Perez, followed closely by McLaren's Lando Norris, Sainz, and Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso.
Towards the rear of the field, Ricciardo and Albon made contact as they approached Turn 2, resulting in both cars colliding with the tyre barrier, prompting the race to be suspended with a red flag.
Following an extensive pause for barrier repairs, teams took the opportunity to pit for tire changes. Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell opted for the hard compound, whereas Fernando Alonso, holding fifth place, decided to stick with his selection of soft tires.
Verstappen once again assumed control of the race as the cars lined up for the standing restart, with a total of 18 cars on the grid. Following closely behind him were Perez, Norris, Sainz, and Alonso. Amidst the chaos of the restart, the Alpines of Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon made contact as they jostled for position into Turn 1. Meanwhile, George Russell faced a setback as he locked up his tires and ran wide, allowing Yuki Tsunoda's Red Bull to overtake him. However, Russell didn't stay behind for long, swiftly regaining his lost position just one lap later.
At the front of the race grew when Perez, who was attempting to close the gap, made a mistake and ran wide at Degner 2 on lap six. This error allowed Verstappen to extend his lead further as Perez lost valuable time recovering from the incident.
Norris was the initial frontrunner to make a pit stop, relinquishing his third-place position on lap 12, followed closely by his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, who pitted from fifth a lap later. Alonso, who had climbed to fourth place, opted to switch to a new set of tires on lap 14, discarding his worn soft compound tires.
On lap 14, there was a significant change in the Mercedes team hierarchy as Hamilton graciously allowed the faster Russell to overtake him, reshuffling their positions. Meanwhile, Verstappen maintained a commanding lead of over 5 seconds ahead of Perez, who opted to pit on the same lap. Shortly thereafter, Sainz, occupying third place, also followed suit, making his pit stop.
Verstappen, rejoining the race just ahead of Norris, who had pitted earlier. Meanwhile, Norris executed a daring pass on Hamilton around the outside of Turn 1, while Perez, who had lost his second-place position to Norris, made a bold move by overtaking Hamilton on the inside at 130R.
Ferrari's strategy saw Charles Leclerc leading the pack for a brief period with an extended stint. However, Verstappen wasted no time and swiftly surged ahead, reclaiming his leading position at the start of lap 21. Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz faced hurdles overtaking the Mercedes duo, causing him to slip 7 seconds behind Perez in the standings.
Just before the halfway mark, Charles Leclerc, in second place, struggled with deteriorating medium tires, briefly going off at Degner 2 and relinquishing his position to Perez, who was over 10 seconds adrift of Verstappen, while Leclerc pitted for the first time on lap 27 alongside Norris for his second stop, with Russell sandwiched between them upon rejoining, before Norris skillfully overtook Russell around the outside at Turn 1 a lap later.
Following his final pit stop on lap 34, Perez reentered the race trailing behind Norris, whereas Verstappen opted to postpone his own pit stop by an additional lap. Upon rejoining the race, Perez swiftly utilized the DRS advantage to successfully overtake Norris at Turn 1 during lap 35, replicating this move to pass Leclerc on the subsequent lap. Meanwhile, Sainz, who briefly took the lead after the pit stops of others, encountered a setback when he locked up and went straight through the chicane on worn tires. This forced him to pit on the following lap, surrendering the lead back to Verstappen and dropping him to seventh place. Nevertheless, armed with fresher tires, Sainz embarked on a remarkable comeback charge.
Sainz swiftly climbed the ranks, overtaking Hamilton and then Norris after benefiting from Russell's pit stop. He secured third place from teammate Leclerc with a DRS-assisted move towards Turn 1, securing the final podium spot. Meanwhile, Verstappen dominated the race, claiming a commanding victory over Perez. Sainz's strong performance earned him second place, with Leclerc settling for third. Norris finished closely behind in fifth place amidst a fierce midfield battle.
With five laps remaining, Piastri and Russell collided at the chicane, yet it was Piastri's mistake on the final lap that cost him dearly, allowing Russell to seize seventh place on the stretch towards Turn 1. Hamilton secured ninth place, while local favorite Tsunoda secured the last point.
