Naomi Osaka and Former Champions Wawrinka, Thiem, and Andreescu Receive U.S. Open Wild Card Invitations

Naomi Osaka and Former Champions Wawrinka, Thiem, and Andreescu Receive U.S. Open Wild Card Invitations

This year’s wild cards are such as two times winner of the U.S OPEN, Naomi Osaka, winner of the Australian open Stan Wawrinka, Dominic Thiem, and Bianca Andreescu.

Osaka was awarded a wild card although she featured sparingly in the tour during the year 2018. Madison Keys clinched her first grand slam title at the US Open that was held in 2018 and year 2020. The actual ranking for direct entry was out of her reach, as with other former winners; hence, the wild card was her only shot at a possible comeback.

This season Osaka returned to the WTA tour after she gave birth to her baby last year. However, she is yet to make efforts to climb back to the level that made her climb the ladder of the world’s best tennis players especially on hard surface as indicated by her two Australian Open titles.

After quitting the tour due to nervous breakdown, Osaka got it wrong during this week’s qualifying round at Cincinnati Open. After that, she was able to post some thoughts on Instagram and described the meeting "strangely unsettling." “missing balls that I shouldn’t miss, hitting balls softer than I remember I used to.”

It is important to note that, in winning the 2019 women’s singles US Open, Canada’s Bianca Andreescu defeated Serena Williams. Before the tour continued at the French Open, the Open champion was out of the court for nine months the previous year due to a back ailment.

This season will be Thiem’s last for attempting to win a Grand Slam before he retires. After years of hard work and dedication, the 30-year-old Austrian finally bagged his only major championship at the 2020 U. S. Open. During the season he has been receiving treatment for a recurrence of wrist injury and thus can only play a maximum of three and half years out of the last three years.

The Swiss Maestro wanted to represent himself to the best of his ability in his 39 years, his third win of the Grand Slam championship was in the current year 2016 US Open, currently holding the fifth position in the history he has got 3 Grand Slam championships with him and out of 72 Grand Slam main draw participations. He was a powerful performer in the past and he was a No. 3 according to the ATP, however, now he is ranked below a hundred.

In the female category, Americans Amanda Anisimova, McCartney Kessler, Alexa Noel, and Iva Jovic were awarded wild cards as well as Chloe Paquet of France and Taylah Preston of Australia.

In the men’s field, Frenchman Alexandre Muller and Australian Tristan Schoolkate were rewarded with wild cards, as were Chris Eubanks, Learner Tien, Zachary Svajda and Matthew Forbes from the United States of America. It is a known fact that first day of the U. S. Open is on the August 26.
