Team USA, Led by Anthony Edwards, Cruises to 117-74 Victory Over Puerto Rico in World Cup Warm-Up Opener

The USA Basketball World Cup squad began with a powerful and impactful opening statement.

With both Anthony Edwards and Cam Johnson each contributing 15 points, the U.S. launched into a commanding 20-0 run during the second half, propelling them to a decisive 117-74 victory over Puerto Rico on Monday night. This matchup marked the initial preparatory game for the American team ahead of the World Cup.Mikal Bridges registered 14 points for the U.S., highlighting a remarkable team performance where seven players achieved double-digit scores. This display led to a significant 67-31 scoring lead over Puerto Rico in the latter half of the game.

Jaren Jackson Jr. added 12 points, Jalen Brunson notched 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and both Bobby Portis and Brandon Ingram registered 11 points apiece for the U.S. squad. Tyrese Haliburton orchestrated the team's offense brilliantly, amassing 12 assists. The U.S. enjoyed notable statistical supremacy, surpassing Puerto Rico with a commanding 53-27 edge in rebounding, a substantial 31-9 lead in points off turnovers, a dominant 10-2 advantage in blocked shots, and an impressive shooting efficiency of 56%, compared to Puerto Rico's 37%.

“A great night for us. ... I think the guys have really picked up what we’re trying to install at both ends,” “I think our whole thing is, if we stay solid and really play without turning it over, without fouling, guard the 3-point line and really do a good job on the glass, then we feel like over 40 minutes we can wear people down,” U.S. coach Steve Kerr said.

Tremont Waters made a 17-point contribution for Puerto Rico, accompanied by George Conditt IV with 12 points, and Jordan Howard pitching in 10 points.

The match showcased a mix of captivating highlights, sporadic mistakes, both failed and triumphant plays. Ultimately, the team boasting a significant talent edge successfully clinched the lead.

Paolo Banchero wowed the audience with a remarkable maneuver, appearing to deflect a shot using his elbow, while Anthony Edwards' forceful dunk brought him tantalizingly close to touching the backboard. The introduction of Austin Reaves onto the court elicited enthusiastic cheers, particularly in a city renowned for its fervent Lakers' fan community. The applause peaked as Reaves promptly sunk a jumper mere moments after donning the USA jersey for the first time.

This event marked the inception of a series of five exhibition contests for the American squad as they gear up for the forthcoming World Cup. An especially noteworthy detail is that this game is the sole exhibition held on American soil. The team is slated to embark on a journey to Malaga, Spain, on Tuesday, where they will engage in matches against Slovenia and Spain over the upcoming weekend. Following this, the team's voyage will take them to the United Arab Emirates, where they are scheduled to take on Greece on August 18 and Germany on August 20 in matchups set to transpire in Abu Dhabi.
