The highly anticipated press conference for Ryan Garcia’s exhibition fight against Rukiya Anpo in Tokyo on December 30, many people do not know whether the event will continue. Golden Boy Promotions that promotes Garcia announced the change of date and as usual generated confusion and peoples’ speculation over the fate of the fight.
There was an indication of a problem on Tuesday night when the company’s boss, Oscar De La Hoya, took to social media to make a statement. There were so many issues seen by the fans and analyzed by experts of the sport of boxing that fans wanted to know what went wrong with the match after getting it confirmed by De La Hoya in the X post.
"Golden Boy Promotions has exclusive rights to Ryan Garcia’s fights. The organizers of this event (Garcia vs. Anpo) have acknowledged as such and have agreed in writing that our sign-off is needed for this event to occur. As no such sign-off has been given, as of today there is no event with Ryan Garcia."
Venued and broadcasted outside his usual purview from Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN, Ryan Garcia’s exhibition match against Rukiya Anpo will be organized by RIZIN, a Japanese combat sports promotion company, and Fanmio. Hence, its future is uncertain due to this conflict which resulted from such an organizational structure.
If concerns are justified by Golden Boy, the fight on December 30 could still happen if Garcia and the organizers only agree with each other. Golden Boy would likely get a step-aside payment for such an arrangement that would settle the promotion dispute and enable the fight to happen.
The New York State Athletic Commission ruled Ryan Garcia out of professional boxing, and he cannot return to the ring until April 2025 at the earliest. He was banned after testing positive for ostarine during a pre fight VADA inspection ahead of his fight with Devin Haney slated for April 20.
The 26-year-old has set a fight against kickboxing star Rukiya Anpo to keep busy and active. This fight lets Garcia get back into the ring before year end 2024 because exhibitions are not professional fights.
Despite the fact there were some times that Garcia and Golden Boy Promotions were not friendly towards each other, the boxer said in the The Ariel Helwani Show that they are ok now. I must say there have been challenges during the trip.
Promoters for Ryan Garcia claimed that Golden Boy Promotions committed breach of contract in 2023 and these breaches continue to terminate the contract. In reply to these actions, Golden Boy together with its chief Oscar De La Hoya decided to sue in Nevada courts in order to ensure they would be provided with the same conditions as the Mexican company promised. Many months later, in September at a press conference for his fight with Oscar Duarte Garcia verbally assaulted Bernard Hopkins and De La Hoya. The ferocious comments made those in the Golden Boy Management, including Kovalev, at the background of the video brought focus on the developing beef.
Garcia may form a strong reaction if Golden Boy tries to get in the way of his already scheduled exhibition match. Such a choice could cautivate further cooperation between the boxer and his promoters because hostility increases and causes a strain on relations to the extreme.
