Shohei Ohtani Receives Shoriki Matsutaro Award Special Prize for Third Consecutive Year: “I Want to Aim Even Higher Next Year”

At the 2024 NPB Awards ceremony held in Tokyo on November 26, Shohei Ohtani was honored with the Shoriki Matsutaro Award Special Prize for the third consecutive year, a recognition of his outstanding achievements in Major League Baseball. Ohtani, who currently plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers, had a historic season, becoming the first player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in the same year. His remarkable accomplishments helped propel the Dodgers to a World Series title, solidifying his place as one of the most dynamic players in the sport.

Ohtani, who was unable to attend the ceremony in person, participated via a video message. “Hello everyone. I’m Shohei Ohtani. Thank you for selecting me to receive the Shoriki Matsutaro Award Special Prize today,” he said with evident joy. “I will use this award as encouragement to work even harder next year.” His message reflected his commitment to continuing his incredible performance in the coming seasons, and his resolve to aim for even greater heights.

The Shoriki Matsutaro Award is one of the most prestigious honors in Japanese baseball, named after the founder of the Yomiuri Giants and a key figure in the development of professional baseball in Japan. Ohtani’s third consecutive win of this special prize is a testament to his exceptional talent and the global impact he has made on the sport.
