Ethiopia’s Tadese Takele and Sutume Kebede dominated the 2025 Tokyo Marathon, securing victories in the men’s and women’s races, respectively, in an event that showcased top-tier long-distance running.
Takele, 22, clinched his first Tokyo Marathon title with a personal-best time of 2 hours, 3 minutes, and 23 seconds, finishing 28 seconds ahead of fellow Ethiopian Deresa Geleta. Kenya’s Vincent Kipkemoi, who placed third last year, repeated his podium finish in 2:04:00. The trio remained together until the final stretch when Takele made his decisive move around the 38-kilometer mark, sprinting to the finish line in Tokyo’s Marunouchi district.
In the women’s category, 30-year-old Sutume Kebede defended her title with a winning time of 2:16:31. She outpaced Kenya’s Winfridah Moraa, while Ethiopia’s Hawi Feysa secured third place.
Japanese runners also made their mark, with Tsubasa Ichiyama finishing as the top local male runner in 10th place (2:06:00). Yohei Ikeda, who had been leading the Japanese pack until 35 km, was overtaken by Ichiyama in the final stretch. Yuka Ando was the fastest Japanese woman, placing 11th (2:23:11).
The race doubled as a selection event for Japan’s team at the upcoming World Athletics Championships, set to take place in Tokyo this September.
