UFC 298 Shocker: Ilia Topuria's Staggering Knockout Dethrones Alexander Volkanovski, Leaving the Champion 'Out Cold' in a Stunning World Title Upset!

UFC 298 Shocker: Ilia Topuria's Staggering Knockout Dethrones Alexander Volkanovski, Leaving the Champion 'Out Cold' in a Stunning World Title Upset!

No male fighter in the lightweight or lower-weight classes has ever won or defended a title after turning 35, and Alexander Volkanovski has now done it twice.

Volkanovski, who was previously knocked out by Islam Makhachev after turning 35, experienced another defeat in the UFC 298 main event, ending his time as the top featherweight.

Ilia Topuria has achieved a major accomplishment by winning his first title and improving his perfect MMA record to 15 wins and 0 losses, all thanks to a remarkable second-round knockout victory.

Topuria confidently expressed himself, almost bordering on being arrogant. As the challenger, he was so self-assured that he even updated his Instagram bio to reflect his confidence.“UFC World Champion” and “Undefeated 15-0”

Following the official press conference earlier in the week, Volkanovski called Topuria a "Conor McGregor wannabe"

In the first round, Volkanovski was using kicks on Topuria's lead leg, and Topuria, being patient, waited for the perfect moment to deliver the knockout he had promised.

Topuria landed a strong low kick and a right hand on Volkanovski, causing a brief impact. The first round was closely fought, and in the last minute, Volkanovski showed better striking, especially after adjusting to Topuria's earlier low kicks.

In the second round, Topuria started by hitting Volkanovski with a right hand and left hook, making him back up towards the fence. Topuria then worked briefly on Volkanovski's body before the champion moved away.

Towards the end of the round, Topuria, who had been boasting about having more power than Volkanovski, shook the Australian with a strong right hook and won the fight.

“Oh my goodness that power. He’s still down cold,” Joe Rogan said in commentary.

“That was so shocking.” “The new era begins,” added Michael Bisping.

Volkanovski has been fighting a lot recently, facing two significant defeats against Islam Makhachev, who knocked him out in their most recent match. When asked about his loss in the press conference, Volkanovski didn't blame it on the number of fights he had.

“You can’t take anything away from Topuria,” Volkanovski said. “If he puts a hand on you like that, you’re going to go down. I don’t care, that’s just that.

“That was a clean right hand and I think no matter who you are, you let one of those land on your chin while you’re caught there, you’re probably going down. Don’t let him catch you, that’s what that was. He caught me, so I won’t take nothing away from him. I’m not going to sit there and say it was this or it was that. I felt great. Camp was great. I felt good in there.”

After his second loss to Makhachev, Volkanovski was visibly emotional and talked to the media about his mental health struggles. He specifically mentioned how challenging it is to lead a balanced life between scheduled fights.

Volkanovski was discussing what he said after he got knocked out by Makhachev.

“That was totally different, This one, I was high spirits the whole way, I’m still in high spirits. He caught me, that’s that.”

“I felt good in there, I felt like I’d seen everything early, but he ended up catching me. I was pretty comfortable in the first round and then we started being like, alright we’ll start to do more. I was just about to do more and he caught me, so that’s just the game. I’m pretty confident we were probably up until then, but that’s just the game.”

After the fight, Volkanovski kept asking for a rematch, and if he gets it, he's confident that the result will not be the same.

“We knew he would be fast,” Volkanovski said. “We knew he would be powerful, obviously. We knew not to be on the cage there and let him catch us there, so again, he did a great job there, so there’s not much I can say other than congrats to him.

“Obviously, I’ve been a champ for a long time and I want that rematch, so that’s something that needs to happen. I’ve been reigning champ for how long? I’ve been a bit of a company man. Went back up on short notice, I fought Max [Holloway] three times, you name it, I’ve done it individually for a long time so I think I deserve that and I it’s going to be different next time.”
