Ilia Topuria once again performed a UFC featherweight championship with a punch, knockout against another of the most famous fighters in the 145-pound division. He has been unbeatable and remains the only top fighter in the UFC that Topuria has faced, making him the first to beat and finish the former featherweight champion at UFC 308.
Topuria had consecutive victories in his debut and snatched the UFC featherweight belt against Alexander Volkanovski through a stunning knockdown in the second round and was eager to fight for the title the first time. While many are still talking about the now infamous Performance of the Year – Hollay’s spectacular knockout of Justin Gaethje in a fight that earned him the honorary BMF title –, Hollay for his part was coming into the fight feeling reinvigorated.
Thus, Topuria again confirmed his statements before the battle and became the first MMA fighter who stopped Holloway with a furious assault in the third round and who knocked him down. His bout proved that he is a tough contender with excellent and improving skill set which made the audience excited for Topuria to become a bonafide contender in the division.
“I caught him with many punches but with that right hand, I felt it,” Topuria said after the fight.
“I just saw it in his face. He started making some step backs and you don’t see that often in Max Holloway... I felt that, my brother told me from the corner to keep pushing, keep putting pressure on him, this is what I did and finally I got the knockout.”
Another fighter, who managed to pin down the audience’s attention on himself, is Khamzat Chimaev, who won a decisive victory over the ex-middleweight champion Robert Whittaker. In the fight, Chimaev was dominating his opponent from the word go and even scored a takedown after the bell rang. He incessantly looked for submission wins with a lot of vigorous intent, proving his great grappling.
He flatted the submission out at a vital stage by smashing his forearm across Whittaker’s face which made Whittaker think he had dislocated his jaw while in the hold. This dominant victory sets up the fight between Chimaev and the middleweight title with Dricus du Plessis in sight especially after Chimaev was benched for quite some time by injuries and health complications. It appears that Chimaev is at last inclined to seize the chance to become a title-holder and the viewers’ interest is increasing.
"They showed me the photo," Chimaev said when speaking to reporters at the UFC 308 post-fight press conference. "I felt something was wrong with his chin when I pushed it. I feel bad. I didn't mean to break his chin, but it's my work. If I make someone feel pain, it makes me I'm happy."
