Facing Early Exits and Winless Start, Andy Murray Vows: 'I Won't Quit' in 2024

Facing Early Exits and Winless Start, Andy Murray Vows: 'I Won't Quit' in 2024

The 36-year-old, a two-time Wimbledon champion, faced early exits at the Brisbane International and his winless streak in 2024 persisted with another loss in France this week.

Despite a challenging start to 2024 with no victories, Andy Murray remains resolute and has no immediate intentions of ending his tennis career, affirming, "I won't quit."

Murray surrendered a lead after winning the first set against Benoit Paire, resulting in a 6-2, 6-7, 3-6 loss in his initial match at the Open Sud de France. His last competitive victory dates back to October 2023 against Yannick Hanfmann in Basel.

Following the match, there were speculations about the appropriateness of Murray continuing his playing career, yet the Scottish player has affirmed his determination to persevere.

Murray replied to a post on X. "Tarnishing my legacy? Do me a favour. I'm in a terrible moment right now I'll give you that. Most people would quit and give up in my situation right now. But I'm not most people and my mind works differently. I won't quit. I will keep fighting and working to produce the performances I know I'm capable of."

"Preach! Imagine telling an accomplished iconic adult your opinion on what they should choose for work and when they should do it. Can't take a legacy away. Accomplishment lives forever."

Murray received encouragement on social media from former US Open champion Andy Roddick, who expressed his support.

Murray, who hinted that this year might mark the end of his tennis career if he doesn't find enjoyment, suffered first-round defeats to Grigor Dimitrov in Brisbane and Tomas Martin Etcheverry at the Australian Open. In his recent match against Benoit Paire, he initially took a commanding 3-0 lead in the opening set, securing a 6-2 victory in just 38 minutes.

Paire, who achieved his highest ranking of 18 in 2016, retaliated by breaking Murray in the initial game of the second set. Despite Murray's comeback to equalize at 4-4, the set eventually progressed to a tie-break.

Trailing 5-1 in the tie-break, Murray mounted a comeback by winning three consecutive points and saving a set point, narrowing the score to 6-5. However, he lost the next point on his serve, allowing Paire to secure the tie-break 7-5 and equalize the match. In the deciding set, after both players faced early service breaks, Paire secured a crucial break at 4-3 and successfully served out the match, securing an impressive victory.
